Atomised 2007
When I create a figurative sculpture I draw with steel creating the structure in the space in front of me. The sculptural figure gradually takes shape being altered and adjusted as it is formed. In the same way ‘Atomised’ is constructed in space using motors. I was fascinated by the concept that our bodies are made up of atoms which are not alive. When we die they disassemble and become part of something else, continuing to exist in another form. ‘Atomised’ shows a figure being created, existing for a brief moment suspended in time and space, before coming apart again piece by piece.
“Jim Bond explores the fascinating puzzles of mimicry and simulation by designing kinetic sculptures that invite us to reflect on how the human body is put together: literally so. Atomised uses a clever machine to synthesise a body from parts barely recognizable as such” - Simon Schaffer - Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science at The University of Cambridge
