Becoming whole 2014
‘Becoming Whole’ continues my fascination with the deconstruction and reconstitution of the body. As a child during walks across the barren slopes of the Cairngorms I was fascinated by tales of the Grey Man. Occurring in special light and weather conditions the figure is a brockham spectre, an illusion of a figure created when shadow is projected onto low lying cloud or mist. ‘Becoming whole’ is a random wire structure which creates a moving projected shadow as it turns. Gradually a hidden figure is revealed on the screen. Just like the grey man and possibly humanity itself, the spectral figure appears briefly, a transient presence before, disappearing back into the chaos.
“Becoming Whole runs an entire game, in which shadows and vulnerably moving figures gradually resolve themselves, to shock and delight, into a luminous figure of the human frame.” - Simon Schaffer - Professor of the History and Philosophy of Science at The University of Cambridge
