Volatile Light IOU - 2019
I regularly work collaboratively with IOU creating sculptural installations and designed built several of the complex machines at the heart Volatile light which is a mesmerizing sound and light installation featuring an array of bespoke motorised arms with LED’s attached to their levers and cranks creating a series of curves, sweeping arcs and hectic scribbles in a darkened space. Utilising an innovative combination of computer software, the lights are then transformed into a complex mixture of overlapping light trails and patterns. Audiences experience an intimate all enveloping wrap around universe of moving light and sound. Built for The Junction in Goole ‘Volatile Light’ was installed at ‘Eureka’ Halifax for 6 months in 2019. For Airborne I created an air sound installation using a meteorological balloon and a jacobs ladder which caused 10,000 volts to jump across a gap. Airborne began as a project to capture sounds produced in the natural world through basic scientific experiments and then manipulate them into a musical soundscape. Over the course of three days at Junction Goole a series of experiments using natural materials were set up. These included boiling mud, snapping slate, dripping water onto a hot plate and fast heating liquid nitrogen. For Fulcrum I built an machine to play an electric guitar, providing a musical backdrop to the fully mechanised set.
